Free Summer Reading Logs for Students

Are you looking for activities for your students to do over the summer break?

Completing a Summer Reading Log is one of the simplest activities you can have your students do over the summer.

Many students have access to books, but not all students or communities have books at their fingertips.

How can I get books to my students over the summer break?

If your students don’t have access to books over the summer, here are some ideas for getting books in the hands of students over the summer vacation:

  • SEND HOME: Send books or printable books home with students on the last day of school.
  • PUBLIC LIBRARY: Encourage students to get a public library card to check out books.
  • BOOK SWAP: During the last week of school, have students bring in 2 or 3 books they can swap with other students.
  • SUMMER LIBRARY: Help start a program where the school library is open one day during the summer break. The fantastic librarian at my elementary school did this for ten years, which was a huge hit!
  • ONLINE READING: Send home a list of free reading sites that students can access. You can even help them get signed up for the free reading sites during the last week of school and teach them how to access the books.

Using reading logs with your students is a perfect way for students to continue practicing reading fluency, accuracy, vocabulary, and reading comprehension during the summer vacation.

Extra Reading for Students Over the Summer

Encouraging your students to keep reading over the summer benefits students in the following ways:

  • Students are exposed to new learning while reading.
  • Students in low-income areas tend to lose even more reading skills than other students due to a lack of learning experiences.
  • Students will return back to school at a higher reading level than when they left school. However, if students don’t read, they may lose as much as three months of reading learning over the summer break.

When students don’t read over the summer, most lose skills and backtrack their reading progress.
