Ok, I guess I might be considered a bit of a freak, but I have always LOVED to take notes. Seriously. Now that I think about it, though, it could be the Flair pens and the journals. Hmm… I’m going to have to give that one some serious thought. Anyway, I love taking notes, and I have just always assumed that everyone else is as crazy as I am and enjoys it. Over the years, I have discovered that kids HATE don’t really like note-taking so much. So, I created some really fun note-taking templates and journaling pages so your kiddos would dive in and fall in love just like I did. 🙂
Shhhhhh! This FREEBIE is just for you reading this blog! I can’t wait to share my 6 Box Note-Taking Strategy with Interactive Journal Pages with you.  🙂
This FREEBIE is best used with:
Interactive Journal
Reading Response Journal
Writer’s Notebook
…however, you can also use these sheets by themselves.
Â
You can use the 6 Box Note-Taking Strategy to help improve reading comprehension is to have your students use the handout while you are reading a fiction text aloud.
Your students will benefit from modeling how to complete the form WITH YOU before they are expected to use it independently.
Â
While you are reading aloud, have your students focus on and take notes on the following fiction/story features:
Setting
Characters
Problem
Solution
Plot
Big Ideas
Â
After students complete the 6 Box Note-Taking handout, have a class discussion on their reflections, ideas, and answers. Â You want to make sure that your students’ reading comprehension is on the right track, especially if you plan to use this form frequently.
Â
Another way you can use this form is to do your read-aloud, discuss each component with your students, and then complete the handout to assess their reading comprehension level and understanding.
Â
After students have several opportunities to practice using this 6 Box Note-Taking sheet, transition to have your students read independently. Students will complete the sheet while they are reading. Â
This will help your kiddos to know what they need to think about and focus on while they are reading. Â Â
Â
I have an interactive form that you can use with your student’s reading response journals.
Â
I have also included these same questions on question cards. Â You will notice that many of these questions ask the students to give text evidence.
Â
Take the question cards and add them to a literacy center. Â Your students can ask themselves or their reading partners the questions. Â They will have the opportunity to discuss the questions orally, then write the answers in their reading journals.
Â
You will also find the following interactive journal pages in this FREEBIE:
