How to teach metacognition reading strategy. #metacognition #readingcomprehension #teaherkarma

Of course, ALL teachers know metacognition, but do we really know how to teach metacognition?

How do I get what’s going on in my brain out “there” for the kiddos to see, understand, and actually be able to use for themselves?

Modeling what, how, and why we are thinking what we are thinking is, in my opinion, the most effective way to teach metacognition and comprehension!!

Model, model, model, and then model some more.  It takes MANY TIMES of modeling for the kids to really catch on and think metacognitively on their own.  It’s a good thing these kids didn’t go to school in the ’70s as I did…..a worksheet taught me just about everything I know today.  🙂

Our 21st-century kiddos just don’t learn by worksheets anymore.  We have to explicitly tell our students what we will teach them, model it for them, and then give them plenty of time to practice!

Because our students respond better to hands-on and interactive learning strategies, I made a set of METACOGNITION THINKING CARDS!

I have my students work in partners that I like to refer to as BRAIN BUDDIES!  My Brain Buddies have very clear guidelines that they adhere to…. in fact, I have them sign a Brain Buddy Reading Contract to know how serious they must take these reading and learning expectations.

I pulled the thinking cards above from a full-product download, BRAIN BUDDY ~ Reading Partners,  and I created this Metacognition THINK SHEET just for the You Oughta Know…. blog hop.  I put the two pieces together and have a link for you to my TpT store, Teacher Karma so that you can get yours FREE.

NOTE:  Originally, this post was a part of a Blog Hop put together by a blogging friend, Jasmine McClain @ Buzzing, with Mrs. McClain. Those links are no longer active.

All the best.
