Easy Cheesy Sentence Writing Strategy to get your students really writing.
How to get students to write. #teacherkarma #writingstrategy
Sentence Success!

If your kiddos are struggling with writing a complete sentence that has a clear and concise message, here are a few things you can try out.

Encourage Oral Language Practice.

Having your students turn and talk with a buddy and share the sentence aloud before writing it down can be a big help.  This type of activity is actually a form of prewriting!

Write Authentically!

Give your students plenty of opportunities to practice grammar and writing in authentic practice.  Try to stay away from busywork.  Students need to see that their writing has meaning and power.  Have them share their writing with a buddy, a group, the class, or with you.

Teach Grammar and Writing Mini-Lessons.

Spend as much time as possible teaching explicit grammar and writing mini-lessons.  Model your thinking/metacognition while you are writing sentences for your students.  Share with them the step-by-step process that your brain goes through when you are writing complete sentences.

Practice makes perfect…or pretty good!

To have the ability to write complete sentences automatically, your kiddos will need a lot of practice!  A LOT OF PRACTICE!  One of the easy cheesy strategies that I like to use with my students is what I like to call…SENTENCE SUCCESS.

I created the SENTENCE SUCCESS handout for my kiddos when I was teaching first and second grade.  I wanted a simple way for them to break the sentence down and make it easy for my students to write a complete sentence.  The strategy also has the student draw a picture before they write.  This will help inspire them to write and give them something to say.  🙂

Here is a very simple example of what you might expect from a first or second-grade student:
