  • Keep them simple
  • Make them FUN
  • Change them up frequently
I LOVE using READING LOGS with my students because it encourages wide reading, improves their reading stamina, and if they are done correctly…. it can make them LOVE reading.
The problem is….some kids think they are boring and not worth their time.  Here are a few tips to help your students see READING LOGS a little differently.

If your students are struggling with returning the logs completed or with their parent’s signatures included, get rid of some of the information on the log. Maybe just include the date, book title, and minutes read.
Make your READING LOGS fun!  I like to challenge my students to compete with one another, compete with themselves…give rewards, or just recognition.  Try honoring and recognizing students every Friday for completing their logs.  MAKE A BIG DEAL OUT OF IT.

My last and favorite tip to encourage kids to really use READING LOGS is to change them up.  Kids get bored of using the same old log…week after week.  To be honest, so do I.  I like to use different reading logs for each holiday season, use silly graphics, or even let my students vote on which ones they want to use.  Maybe even put out 5 logs and allow each student to select their own READING LOG.

I would love to hear comments and see examples of READING LOGS that you use in your classroom and what works for your kiddos.
YOU HAVE THE ABILITY TO CHANGE A LIFE, EVEN YOUR OWN.
All the best!
